Southeast PDP leaders decry crisis over party’s scribe — News — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the Southeast geopolitical zone rose from a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday and condemned what they called attempts to plunge the party into a more serious crisis ahead of the 2027 general election.

They warned that if the lingering crisis over the position of the party’s national secretary is not immediately resolved, the party could suffer more serious damage in the 2027 election.

The meeting, which was presided over by PDP National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, and attended by Board of Trustees member, Chris Ubah, insisted that there was no basis for disagreement since the party is awaiting the decision of the Supreme Court on the position of the National Secretary.

He clarified that the meeting was actually called by Southeast members of the PDP NWC, not the national leadership.

Anyanwu, who took time to explain the genesis of the crisis over his position as national scribe, blamed the national vice chairman in the Southeast, Ali Odefa, for what he called political mischief.

According to him, Odefa, who has been expelled as a member of the PDP, is not in a position to convene any meeting of PDP members in the Southeast for any reason.

Six out of the 10 members of the South East Zonal Working Committee attended the meeting.

Anyanwu explained that he called the meeting to provide an inclusive platform after what he described as the exclusion of some stakeholders at a prior meeting presided over by Odefa in Enugu.

“I decided to summon this meeting so that everyone would have the opportunity to voice their opinion,” Anyanwu said.

He accused Odefa of having misled Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State into demanding his resignation as national secretary over his failed governorship bid in Imo State.

He also alleged that Odefa had been sacked as a member of the party by his ward and had ceased to be a member of the PDP.

Anyanwu further alleged that the Appeal Court judgment that declared Sunday Ude-Okoye as the rightful PDP National Secretary was obtained deceitfully.

He insisted that his election to the position could only be overturned by the party’s national convention.

Anyanwu, who has appealed the court judgment to the Supreme Court and secured a stay of execution, maintained that he remains the party’s national secretary until the convention scheduled for December.

He urged Ude-Okoye to exercise patience until then.

Tuesday’s meeting, which was held at the national secretariat of the PDP, had been disowned by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, who stated that the meeting had not been approved by the NWC.

He reaffirmed that the Southeast stakeholders had already concluded a successful meeting in Enugu last Friday, led by Governor Mbah.

Former national youth leader of the PDP, Sunday Ude-Okoye, who had attempted to assume office as the party’s national secretary, insists that Anyanwu has ceased to be national secretary courtesy of an Appeal Court judgment.

All other PDP leaders from the South East, including Governor Peter Mbah, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees Senator Adolphus Wabara, stayed away from the meeting that lasted over four hours.

Before the 2024 Imo State governorship election, Southeast stakeholders had met in Enugu and nominated Ude-Okoye for the position of National Secretary, as Anyanwu had been chosen as the PDP governorship candidate for the state.

However, Anyanwu has filed a motion for a stay of execution and is appealing the ruling at the Supreme Court.
