Nigerian music sensation BIG KPlus has taken a walk down memory lane, reflecting on his remarkable journey from humble beginnings to becoming a household name. His story is one of grit and perseverance.
In a chat with The Guardian, the fast rising artiste shared intimate details about his early days in the music industry, revealing the challenges he faced and the determination that drove him to succeed.
He recalled his days as a studio errand boy, where he would lurk around the studio, hoping to catch the attention of producers who might take pity on him and offer free studio time. This strategy eventually paid off, as producers like Siege and Jimmy’s Beatz took him under their wing, working with him for free and providing invaluable support.
“There were so many challenges, but today I will talk about being the studio errand boy and lurking around the studio so that I could get pitied by producers and get free studio time. Producers like Siege and Jimmy’s Beatz took me in, groomed and supported me for free.
“I am so grateful to them to this day. Those early days were tough, but they taught me the value of hard work and determination,” BIG KPlus revealed.
Lifting the lid on the creative process behind his breakout hit, Jungle, he explained that the song was intentionally crafted to merge his unique sound with elements of highlife and trap, creating a classic Afrobeats record that would resonate with listeners.
“Right from when I was making the beat, I thought about a classic Afrobeats record that merges my sound with highlife and a mix of trap. I wanted something relatable and easy to sing along to that would captivate both the old and young.
“I drew inspiration from Fela, Sarkodie, 2Baba, and Sir Victor Uwaifo. I remember listening to them put me in that zone to create what I had imagined in my head,” the singer said.
He expressed immense pride in the project, highlighting the effort and dedication he put into its production. “It feels amazing! That project was something I put a lot of effort into. I specifically came to Lagos to work on this song because I wanted to embrace the collaborative spirit that Lagos is known for – where producers and artistes come together to create magic.
“This is the most time I’ve ever dedicated to a single project, and it feels incredible. I think my fans were especially excited to hear the full mixed versions of the song in its entirety. I wouldn’t say I am shocked, but I will say I am delighted that a lot of people identified with what I created and fell in love with it just as much as I did (and still do) when I first made the song.”
