Crystal Palace forward, Asher Agbinone, has opened up about his Nigerian heritage, revealing that he remains open to a potential call-up to the Super Eagles while keeping his international options available.
The 19-year-old, who has represented Crystal Palace since his youth days, is eligible to play for three countries: England, Nigeria, and Congo.
Agbinone’s father is Nigerian, while his mother is from Congo, giving him the unique opportunity to choose between the three national teams.
Agbinone has made a notable start to his senior career, having debuted for Palace in the Premier League against Nottingham Forest in October 2024.
Although he has impressed in limited appearances, Agbinone was loaned out to League Two club Gillingham in a bid to gain more first-team experience.
While his focus is on club football, Agbinone has not ruled out an international future with Nigeria. Reflecting on his diverse background, he shared with Palace TV: “South London is a very diverse place. My mum’s from Congo, my dad is from Nigeria.
“Whenever someone asks me where I am from, I’ll tell them where I’m from probably. I can never forget where I am from; it shaped who I am today.”
Agbinone’s commitment to his Nigerian roots could prove crucial for the Super Eagles, who could look to incorporate his skills into their squad in the future.
His situation follows the line of former Palace graduate Victor Moses, who chose to represent Nigeria and played an important role in their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations success.
