No fewer than 990 new students were matriculated by the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi for the 2024/2025 academic session.
said a total of 990 students have been admitted in the various departments and faculties of the institution in
Prof. Jessy Uneke, Vice-Chancellor of the university disclosed this at the matriculation of the university at its campus in Uburu on Saturday.
Uneke said that with the new intake, the university’s population had grown from 26 students at inception in December, 2021 to 2,496 in its 2024/2025 academic year.
The VC said that the institution was committed to actualising the mission of the university which he noted was to serve mankind with the highest form of professionalism, ethics and excellence.
Uneke said that the institution core values and vision was to become a foremost international university reputable for learning, innovation, research, and collaboration where the highest form of quality manpower development for the health and other related sectors would be achieved.
He emphasised that the institution prioritised academic excellence and discipline by developing mechanisms that would enable lecturers not to be absent from their classes and ensuring stability of academic programmes and activities without any disruption.
“The students’s character development is our utmost priority; we offer a minimum of two weeks orientation to our new students.
“We have well equipped and air-conditioned classrooms and laboratories to enhance conducive learning and research.
“We are the only institution that runs 100 per cent on campus hostel with constant power supply and water at the hostels.
“We have provided a number of standard cafeterias for students’ feeding and shall be providing more very soon,” the VC said.
On students discipline, Uneke said that the institution had maintained zero tolerance to violation of the school rules and regulations.
He said; ” The university maintains very strict discipline, the university rules and regulations are unforgiving when they are violated.
“Between the last matriculation and the present, the Senate of the university approved disciplinary actions on 14 students depending on the magnitude of their offences.
“Two students were expelled due to examination misconduct; three students received one year suspension for stealing, five students received one semester suspension for stealing and three students were withdrawn as a result of poor academic performance.”
Uneke admonished the matriculating students to shun any acts that constituted academic/social misconduct that could lead to their expulsion from the university.
The highpoint of the event was the admission of oath of matriculation to the matriculating to 990 newly admitted students by the VC.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences currently runs seven faculties including; faculties of Dentistry, Health Science and Technology, Nursing Sciences and Natural Sciences.
Other faculties are; faculty of Allied Health Science, faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and faculty of Pharmaceutical sciences.
Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi was represented at the event by Prof. Grace Umezuruike, Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The governor, in a good will message, advised the new students to take seriously the main purpose of their being in the school which was to pursue academic learning.
He also urged them to shun all forms of antisocial behaviour and be ambassadors of their states and families.
The governor equally commended the managememt and staff of the institution for making the university a world class citadel of academic learning and for imbibing high maintenance culture.
