El-Rufai attacks Governor Sani over Kaduna’s debts — Nigeria — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Kaduna State governor, Uba Sani, is under fire following his remarks regarding the huge debt burden he said he inherited from his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Governor Sani, during a town hall meeting in Kaduna, expressed the challenges his administration faces in paying workers’ salaries due to the substantial debts left behind by the previous government.

Sani disclosed that the state inherited a staggering sum of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities from the administration of El-Rufai.

“Despite the huge debt burden of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities sadly inherited from the previous administration, we remain resolute in steering Kaduna State towards progress and sustainable development,” Sani said.

“We have conducted a thorough assessment of our situation and are sharpening our focus accordingly. It gladdens my heart to inform you that despite the huge inherited debt on the state, to date, we have not borrowed a single kobo.”

He lamented the impact of currency exchange fluctuations, stating that the state is now paying nearly triple the amount borrowed by the previous administration due to the rise in the exchange rate.

In response to the governor’s accusations, El-Rufai’s son, Bashir, accused Sani of trying to cover his administration’s incompetence, noting that the governor was running a flawed administration.

El-Rufai claimed that Sani’s comments deflected attention from the dereliction of his duties.

“These guys have realised that they are wholly incompetent and the only way to mask the nonsense is to deflect. From a governor who is always sleeping in Abuja to a litany of incompetent aides who were only rewarded for foolish political reasons,” Bashir El-Rufai said on X.

“One would think that from all the FAAC allocations these unserious clowns have changed to dollars, debt would be the least of their problems,” he said in another post.

He then proceeded to repost a number of post that ridicule Governor Sani’s claim on the debt.
