As part of efforts to revolutionise Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in Nigeria, Casio Middle East and Africa FZE, has unveiled an exclusive calculator specifically designed to cater to the needs of students and educators in the country.

The new calculator integrates basic calculation functionalities with advanced features such as differential calculation, integrations and complex numbers, among others.

The Managing Director of the firm, Takashi Seimiya, who spoke at the Casio education conference in Lagos, themed: ‘Fostering innovation and problem-solving in the Nigerian classroom through the use of technology,’ where the product was unveiled, said the launch followed their partnership with SKLD Integrated Services and successful training of over 1,200 teachers on the use of calculators with inquiry-based learning.

“This calculator is a testament to our commitment to deliver the highest level of support and innovation to Nigerian educators and students by equipping them with tools needed to excel in science, mathematics, and engineering in today’s world,” Seimiya said.

During the conference, discussions were centred on leveraging technology to elevate learning outcomes in Nigerian schools.

Executive Director of SKLD Integrated Services Limited, Tayo Osiyemi, moderated a panel session focusing on integration of technology to enhance educational practices and societal impact.

The panelists agreed that technology aids learning and is key to national development.

They also called for collaboration between government and development partners to reduce the cost of deploying technology in the teaching and learning process.

Director, Education Resource Centre at the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs Akinlade Olatomirin, said the introduction of the new calculator aligns with the government’s goals of promoting inquiry-based learning and preparing students for future challenges.

“I want to say the new model, which is non-programmable, is a long-awaited technology that must be embraced by all educators and examining bodies,” Olatomirin added.

Secondary school students who attended the event also participated in a mathematics quiz competition using the new Casio calculators.

Lawal Ismail from Falomo Senior High School emerged winner and received a cheque of N500,000; Bada AbdulSalam from Oriwu Senior Model College came second and received N250,000; while Chineye Oforma from Canterbury International School came third and received N100,000.

In addition to the launch, the organisation also pledged its continued support for educational activities, and to enhance educators’ knowledge using genuine scientific calculators.

Prominent figures from the sector, including the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education and the West African Examination Council (WAEC), among others, attended the event.
