World Igbo Congress to meet on Nnamdi Kanu, insecurity in Southeast — Nigeria — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Date:

The World Igbo Congress (WIC) has scheduled an emergency meeting for Friday, January 25, to address pressing issues affecting the Southeastern region of Nigeria.

In a statement, the Chairman of WIC’s Board of Directors, Dr. Festus Okere, directed Vice Chairman Basil Onwukwe to convene the meeting of Igbo leaders in the diaspora at 7:00 p.m. Alaigbo time.

The agenda includes the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu, facing terrorism charges since his extradition from Kenya in June 2021, recently requested the transfer of his case to the Southeast if no judge in Abuja is willing to preside.

Other topics to be discussed are the leadership challenges in the Southeast, the growing militarisation and insecurity in the region, and strategies for WIC to create a unified diaspora solution to address these concerns.

The meeting underscores the diaspora body’s commitment to tackling issues impacting Ndigbo and advocating for the region’s well-being.
